First experimental study of photon polarization in radiative B0s decays.

2017

The polarization of photons produced in radiative $B^{0}_{s}$ decays is studied for the first time. The data are recorded by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$ at center-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$TeV. A time-dependent analysis of the $B^{0}_{s} \to \phi \gamma$ decay rate is conducted to determine the parameter ${\mathcal{A}}^\Delta$, which is related to the ratio of right- over left-handed photon polarization amplitudes in $b \to s \gamma$ transitions. A value of ${\mathcal{A}}^\Delta=-0.98^{\,+0.46\,+0.23}_{\,-0.52\,-0.20}$ is measured. This result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction within two standard deviatio…

Alignement moléculaire : caractérisation et application à la mesure de thermalisation ultra-rapide et au contrôle de génération d'harmoniques

2013

The thematic of this thesis is molecular alignment. The latter is a very important topic that opens the way toward a much more thin control of many phenomenons. So, we have developed a new measurement technique of the molecular alignment along one axis that permits to preserve the sign of alignment. This one is, like other measurement techniques developed by the team, based on the measurement of the refractive index variation induced by the molecular alignment. The technique developed then also permits the molecular alignment measurement, being also an application of it because it allows the third harmonic generation. In the last study, molecular alignment is implemented to show that it bring…

A Measure of Polarization for Tourism: Evidence from Italian Destinations

2011

This paper proposes an index of polarization for tourism which links the axiomatic theory of Esteban and Ray with the classical hierarchical agglomerative clustering techniques. The index is aimed at analyzing the dynamics of the average length of stay across Italian destinations, and more specifically to detect whether the polarization within the set of clusters of places with similar values of the indicator has varied over time.

Signatures of photon and axion-like particle mixing in the gamma-ray burst jet

2011

Photons couple to Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) or more generally to any pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson in the presence of an external electromagnetic field. Mixing between photons and ALPs in the strong magnetic field of a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) jet during the prompt emission phase can leave observable imprints on the gamma-ray polarization and spectrum. Mixing in the intergalactic medium is not expected to modify these signatures for ALP mass > 10^(-14) eV and/or for < nG magnetic field. We show that the depletion of photons due to conversion to ALPs changes the linear degree of polarization from the values predicted by the synchrotron model of gamma ray emission. We also show that when …

Looking at the axionic dark sector with ANITA

2020

The ANITA experiment has recently observed two anomalous events emerging from well below the horizon. Even though they are consistent with tau cascades, a high energy Standard Model or Beyond the Standard Model explanation is challenging and in tension with other experiments. We study under which conditions the reflection of generic radio pulses can reproduce these signals. We propose that these pulses can be resonantly produced in the ionosphere via axion-photon conversion. This naturally explains the direction and polarization of the events and avoids other experimental bounds.

Scalar contributions to b→c(u)τν transitions

2017

Abstract We perform a comprehensive analysis of scalar contributions in b → c τ ν transitions including the latest measurements of R ( D ( ⁎ ) ) , the q 2 differential distributions in B → D ( ⁎ ) τ ν , the τ polarization asymmetry for B → D ⁎ τ ν , and the bound derived from the total width of the B c meson. We find that scalar contributions with the simultaneous presence of both left- and right-handed couplings to quarks can explain the available data, specifically R ( D ( ⁎ ) ) together with the measured differential distributions. However, the constraints from the total B c width present a slight tension with the current data on B → D ⁎ τ ν in this scenario, preferring smaller values fo…

No chiral light bending by clumps of axion-like particles

2019

We study the propagation of light in the presence of a parity-violating coupling between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs). Naively, this interaction could lead to a split of light rays into two separate beams of different polarization chirality and with different refraction angles. However, by using the eikonal method we explicitly show that this is not the case and that ALP clumps do not produce any spatial birefringence. This happens due to non-trivial variations of the photon's frequency and wavevector, which absorb time-derivatives and gradients of the ALP field. We argue that these variations represent a new way to probe the ALP-photon couping with precision frequency measuremen…

Absolute Chiral Sensing in Dielectric Metasurfaces Using Signal Reversals.

2020

Sensing molecular chirality at the nanoscale has been a long-standing challenge due to the inherently weak nature of chiroptical signals, and nanophotonic approaches have proven fruitful in accessing these signals. However, in most cases, absolute chiral sensing of the total chiral refractive index has not been possible, while the strong inherent signals from the nanostructures themselves obscure the weak chiroptical signals. Here, we propose a dielectric metamaterial system that overcomes these limitations and allows for absolute measurements of the total chirality, and the possibility for a crucial signal reversal that enables chirality measurements without the need for sample removal. As…

Optical properties of the low-molecular amorphous azochromophores and their application in holography

2015

The films based on the low-molecular amorphous azochromophore 2-(3-(4-((4- (Ethyl(2-(trityloxy)ethyl)amino)phenyl)diazenyl)styryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene) malononitrile (IWK-2M) were prepared. The optical properties of the material, such as transmittance and reflection spectra of the film, sensitivity to polarization holographic recording by two wavelengths (405 and 532 nm) were studied. The direct relief formation during the polarization holographic recording was explored, relief depth dependence on exposure and record beam intensity was investigated. The holographic matrix on this material base was produced without chemical etching process; the replication of holographic image w…

Singlet‐Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Unlocking Hyperpolarization with Metabolism

2020

Abstract Hyperpolarization‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging can be used to study biomolecular processes in the body, but typically requires nuclei such as 13C, 15N, or 129Xe due to their long spin‐polarization lifetimes and the absence of a proton‐background signal from water and fat in the images. Here we present a novel type of 1H imaging, in which hyperpolarized spin order is locked in a nonmagnetic long‐lived correlated (singlet) state, and is only liberated for imaging by a specific biochemical reaction. In this work we produce hyperpolarized fumarate via chemical reaction of a precursor molecule with para‐enriched hydrogen gas, and the proton singlet order in fumarate is released a…
